A Mom on a Mission: Gus’s Drive-In & Restaurant

More than fifty years ago, a mother in Florida received an opportunity to own and operate an out-of-town restaurant. Ambitious as she was, she packed up her three children and moved them to Columbus where she opened Gus’s Drive-In & Restaurant on Victory Drive. That woman was Mama Gus, the hardworking, compassionate and dedicated restauranteur who patrons have known and loved for decades.

Find Fresh, Local Fare at Gulf Coast Farmers Markets

There’s something inherently holistic about strolling through stands and buying peak-season fruits and vegetables, artisanal breads and locally sourced meats directly from the great people who prepared them. Farmers markets are good places to feel the pulse of a community while supporting it. After relishing the satisfaction of catching a big, beautiful fish, I love knowing that I can take my prize to a premier seafood restaurant in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach where a talented chef will transform it into an exquisite meal.

Beachin’ Breakfasts: Our favorite breakfast restaurants on the Alabama Gulf Coast

Breakfast holds a special place in my heart, and not just because it’s the most important meal of the day. Over the years, some of my favorite family memories were made at the table over breakfast. Though I’m no longer flipping smiling flapjacks to ease first-day-of-school jitters, I still relish the mornings and the comforts of breakfast staples.
