A Mom on a Mission: Gus’s Drive-In & Restaurant

More than fifty years ago, a mother in Florida received an opportunity to own and operate an out-of-town restaurant. Ambitious as she was, she packed up her three children and moved them to Columbus where she opened Gus’s Drive-In & Restaurant on Victory Drive. That woman was Mama Gus, the hardworking, compassionate and dedicated restauranteur who patrons have known and loved for decades.

Find Fresh, Local Fare at Gulf Coast Farmers Markets

There’s something inherently holistic about strolling through stands and buying peak-season fruits and vegetables, artisanal breads and locally sourced meats directly from the great people who prepared them. Farmers markets are good places to feel the pulse of a community while supporting it. The Alabama Gulf Coast has some fantastic farmers markets that are well worth a visit during your next stay in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.

Cook Your Catch

I took a little break to enjoy the retired life, but I’m back to tell you about one of my favorite Gulf Shores vacation pastimes. You all know I’m an avid angler who loves casting my line into the gulf and reeling in sizeable red snapper, yellowfin tuna, amberjack and more. After relishing the satisfaction of catching a big, beautiful fish, I love knowing that I can take my prize to a premier seafood restaurant in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach where a talented chef will transform it into an exquisite meal.

Nothing whets my appetite like a steaming plate of seafood favorites. Grouper, crawfish, oysters – I love it all.

Spring is an exciting time on the Gulf Coast. Winter’s icy grip rescinds, and warm weather awakens the flora, fauna and folks who call the coastline home. Naturally, people are ready to go outside and smell the roses, as they say. So the region offers a particularly fun springtime festivity. Lovers of all things Creole and Cajun, this one’s for you.

Beachin’ Breakfasts: Our favorite breakfast restaurants on the Alabama Gulf Coast

Breakfast holds a special place in my heart, and not just because it’s the most important meal of the day. Over the years, some of my favorite family memories were made at the table over breakfast. Though I’m no longer flipping smiling flapjacks to ease first-day-of-school jitters, I still relish the mornings and the comforts of breakfast staples.
